CRYPT OF THE LOVING DAMNED is a fantasy-horror exploitation flick. It pays homage to 1960’s and 70’s Grindhouse style cinema, the Italian Gialli films, The Betty Page bondage films but the biggest influences being the Mario Bava gothic dramas (KILL BABY KILL and WHIP AND THE BODY), the Edgar Allan Poe adaptations directed by Roger Corman ( TOMB OF LEGIA) and the 1930’s Universal monsters. ( FRANKENSTEIN)

On Halloween night 2004, Producers teamed up with JACKYLL to shoot a short bondage film in the PETTY PAGE style. The whole project was however going to be treated as an expressionist horror film. JACKYLL wrote the script and shooting began in late January 2005. Later on, JACKYLL went on to produce the film on his own, having fired the initial producers from the project for creative frictions. The story took a brand new direction was turned into a crazy 38 minutes B-movie extravaganza. The production was huge. The film was shot with a budget of less than 9000$ and a skeleton crew of…Three. It was shot simultaneously in French and English. Every costume and sets had to be build from scratch ( all of the sets were build and set-up in the basement of JACKYLL’s parents for the budget was limited to only a few days of shoot in an actual studio in montreal where most of the lab scenes were shot.), special lightening equipment had to be bought for the occasion to achieve a certain look. Production ran over 15 months that again proved to be a draining experience for everyone involved. Very long hours of shoots ( mostly 14 to 18 hours a day in the heat and claustrophobic sets) and no crew so every actor had to participate in the making of the film. The results however speak for themselves.

The English version was completed and released in the summer of 2006. The French version is planned for a Christmas 2008 release since other projects have delayed it’s initial Christmas 2007 release date. It may be the same film, the French version however differs from the English version as the pacing, acting and sometimes camera angles vary.

Is CRYPT OF THE LOVING DAMNED for B movie fans only? No. It is a unique take on an off-beat subject. It is original, different and artistically refreshing.
